Leonard Fisher (or Leonhard Fischer) was born on 28 March 1752 in Spielberg, Wurttemberg, Germany.1 He immigrated to New York in the mid-18th century. 

He marries Susanna Reigler on 18 September 1774 in New York City. Among their known children were:

  • Mary Elizabeth was born on 30 September 1775 and married Andreas Sembler.
  • Georg Leonhard was born on 25 October 1780 and died young.
  • Thomas was born on 18 October 1784 and married Olive White Hodges.
  • Susanna was born on 14 May 1786 and died young.
  • George was born on 18 November 1782 and married Lucinda South.
  • Leonhard was born on 18 October 1787 and died young.
  • Heinrich “Henry” was born on 3 March 1790
  • Susanna Justina was born on 15 October 1791
  • Wilhelm “William” was born on 23 July 1793
  • Jacobus “James” H. was born on 31 March 1797 and married Ann [surname unknown].
  • John Huaptmann was born on 28 September 1794; his wife’s name is unproven.
  • Susanna Magdalena was born on 4 March 1799

On 30 January 1776, he joined Colonel Lasher’s Independent Regiment, stationed on Long Island. Lasher was characterized by a Tory as a German shopkeeper of lowest extraction.”2 After the British landed on Staten Island on 3 July 1776, the regiment retired to Manhattan and soon evacuated north of the city. His unit fought at the Battle of Long Island, the Battle of Brooklyn, the Battle of Haarlem Heights, and the Battle of White Plains.2

In 1777, Leonard served in Dutchess County, New York, and later joined the 1st Battalion Militia Philadelphia Militia under Colonel Jacob Morgan and Captain John Kling.3 Later that year, he joined the 3rd Battalion under Colonel Morgan and Captain Linnington.4 His unit fought at the Battle of Princeton and the Battle of Monmouth.5

On 26 September 1778, he was promoted to Ensign under Colonel William Bradford and Lieutenant Henry Meyers. On 17 May 1779, he was promoted to 1st Lieutenant in the 3rd Battalion under Colonel Will.3 After the war, he returned to New York City. 

The Patriot died on 22 December 1832 in New York City. His place of internment is lost to time.
