Author: Eric H. Troutman
Johann Jost Hoffmann was born in Wiltenstein, Germany on October 22, 1716. He arrived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvavia on October 27, 1738 aboard the ship St. Andrew. Henry Hoffmann was also on the same ship and he and Jost are believed to be brothers. Before 1746 Jost Hoffmann married Maria Catharina Meiser daughter Johann Michael & Anna Elizabeth (Sixth) Meiser. The Meiser family was part of the group of Palatines that came to New York in 1709 and then moved on to the Tulpehocken region of what is now Berks County, PA in 1723. Maria Catharina Meiser was born 1729 in Heidelberg Twp., Lancaster County (now Lebanon County), PA.

Jost Hoffmann was the father of ten children: John George, Catharine Elizabeth, Susanna, Maria Elizabeth, Magdalena, John Jacob, Anna Maria “Mary”, John, Eva Christina and Christian. Three of his daughters married Trautmann brothers from the area of Host, Tulpehocken Twp., Berks County, PA. Susanna to Michael, Maria Elizabeth to Johannes and Magdalena to Johann Philip Trautmann. The Trautmanns were all veterans of the Revolutionary War having served in the Berks County, Pennsylvania Militia.

Jost Hoffmann settled in Mill Creek Twp., Lancaster County (now Lebanon Co.), PA, just over the boarder from Heidelberg Twp., Berks County, PA. He was a farmer his entire life and died April 21, 1794, probably on his planation in Mill Creek Twp. He is buried at the St. Paul’s Church Cemetery, Millbach, Lebanon County, PA, not far from where he resided.

Jost Hoffmann took the Oath of Allegiance to the state of Pennsylvania on September 10, 1777 in Berks County, PA to support the war against Great Britain.
Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
