Elizabeth Hill was born 18 September 1747 at Caroline county, Virginia, the only daughter of William Hill, Sr. [P-181639], and Susanna Smithers. She had ten brothers. She married William Anson Halbert, Sr., [P-172469] 25 June 1765.
In 1786, they moved to Pendleton County, South Carolina, which is now Anderson County. They settled on the Saluda River.
After William’s death in 1808, Elizabeth lived with her daughter Susannah Acker until her death. They were buried on their own place three miles south of Big Creek Church, between the waters of Toney Creek and Broadmouth.
During the War of the Revolution, while William was away in the war, Elizabeth was in bed with a three-day old baby when some Tory neighbors came, put a pistol to her forehead and told her if she did not get up they would blow her brains out. She very wisely got up, laid on the floor, while they took the bed, emptied out the feathers and rode away with the tick, as cloth was very valuable in that time.
His children were Joel (born 1769), Martha (born 1772), John (born 1773), Enos (born 1775), Arthur (born 1777), James (born 1778), Susannah (born 1780), Frances (born 1782), William Anson Jr. (born 1784), Joshua (born 1785), Elizabeth (born 1788), Mary (born 1791) and Lucinda (born 1793).
William died 28 December 1808 at Anderson County, South Carolina. Elizabeth died 6 November 1836 at Anderson County, South Carolina. Both are buried at the Halbert Family Cemetery at Anderson County, South Carolina.
Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!
Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
