Author: James Gray Chandler
William Puryear was born in Warwick Co., VA in about 1725 and he moved to Lunenburg (now Mecklenburg) Co. He married Rebecca Sneed in 1750 in Lunenburg, Virginia and had 6 sons there:
John, Robert, William Jr., Thornton, Thomas, and Samuel; and 3 daughters: Sarah, Elizabeth, and Nancy.
Later William was to move to Granville County, NC in 1769, where he was a planter and court records show gifts of slaves to his sons Robert, William Jr., and John.
In 1771 he joined the Granville Co., Militia commanded by Col. Richard Henderson and took the Oath Of Allegiance between 22 May–02 Aug 1778 To State of NC.
In the 1786 Census for the Country Line District of Granville Co., NC, William is listed as having just himself over 21 but under 50; no white males under 21; 1 white female of any age; 1 slave over 12 but under 50; and 5 slaves over 50 or under 12.
He died 13 Feb 1808 in Granville County, NC
