William Cloud was born Sep. 17th of 1750 in Rowan Co., NC to Joseph Cloud Sr. of Chester Co., PA that was deputy surveyor in Ludenburg Co., VA & Rowan Co., NC between 1749 to 1755, 2 other siblings, Isaac Cloud & Joseph Cloud Jr. also served as officers of militia. William served the state of VA in counties of Henry & Patrick between 1776 to 1783 under Col. William Christian, Capt. James Lyon, Capt. John Pyrtle, Jonathan Hanby & Eliaphaz Shelton as private, lieutenant & captain. Cloud was appointed captain of a militia in Henry County on July 26th of 1782 succeeding Jonathan Hanby who resigned to command another campaign in the south, then sworn in by the courts as captain of Henry Co. on June 27th of 1783. During Cloud's services, he was engaged in the Cherokee Expedition of 1776 under Col. Christian as a private volunteer a duration of 4 months being the most he served, he served as lieutenant a duration of 5 months between 1777 & 1778. Cloud is acknowledged by pensioners; Bartlett Belcher (W2054), Jacob Lawson (W86), Robert Hensley (S2343) & John Willis (S1603) in ranks as captain between 1779 to 1781. After Cloud's services ended of the war into peacetime, William served as a court juror, high sheriff, tax processioner & justice of the peace on record between 1792 to his passing in Feb. of 1842 at 91. Cloud was married 3 times, had 12 children between 1774 to 1842.
