Jonathan was a Revolutionary War Patriot from Westfield, Union County (now Essex County), New Jersey. Jonathan was born 22 January 1732 in Westfield. He married Martha Miller (1737-1798) in 1753 in Westfield. She is the daughter of John Miller (1706-1794 and Martha Pierson (1697-1770). Jonathan was brought to life by stories told by his granddaughter Abby. Jonathan served the cause by providing Washington’s Army in New Jersey the following:

52 cords of wood
curing 27 1/4 cords of wood
7 days of carting wood
3 days of horse hire
1 bushel of corn
1 bushel of oats

He was reimbursed by Certificate #138 dated 11 March 1780 for $5140 Continental and Certificate #38 dated 07 Aug 1780 for $4092.60. Daniel Marsh, Quartermaster, issued the Certificates in Trenton New Jersey.

He is buried at Westfield Presbyterian Cemetery. His tombstone still stands:

who died June the 30th 1793
in the 62d year of his age
Wife and Children may deplore his frugal hands no more provide
We trust he rests at Jesus side

Jonathan's lineage is itself remarkable. His Cory Great Great Grandfather immigrated to the new world between 1637 and 1640. John Cory is listed as residing in Southold, New York and served as the Whaling Commissioner in 1644. He qualifies as an immigrant ancestor for the Order of Founders and Patriots.

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
