Johann Georg Brach was born on 7 April 1752 and was baptized on 17 May 1752 at Augustus Lutheran Church, Providence Township, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania, a son of Caspar Brach and Sophia. There are a number of variants for the surname including Brough and Brouch, but the most frequent spelling was Prough.  He was commonly known as George, as was the custom in many Germanic families.

His parents resided at Pike Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania, by 1755, where they were members of the Oley Hill Church.

George Brough was listed as an Ensign on the roster of the First Company of Captain Jacob Wetstein, dated 17 May 1777. The group was raised in Pine Grove Township, Berks County. The Company was on duty around Philadelphia, participating in the Battle of Germantown under General Washington.

In a later roster, George was listed as a Lieutenant in the First Company of Captain Jacob Wetstein of Colonel Michael Lindemuth’s Third Pennsylvania Battalion.

George married Rosina Herring, likely at Berks County, about 1777. Their known children were:

  • Johann George was born on 10 September 1779.
  • Henry was born on 11 January 1782.
  • Peter was born on 27 February 1784.
  • Christina was born on 2 September 1786.
  • Eva was born about 1789.
  • Elizabeth was born about 1792.
  • John was born on 24 December 1794.
  • Mary was born in 1797.

In September 1798, Rosina Brough appeared before the Orphans Court for the County of Huntingdon. As George’s widow, she addressed the court regarding her minor children: Christina, aged 12, Eve, aged 9, John aged 4, Elizabeth aged 6, and Mary about 15 months. At her request, guardians were appointed.

Before the same court was George Brough Jr., eldest son of George Brough deceased. Also petitioning the court were Henry Brough and Peter Brough. The three boys are minors over the age of 14 years and requested to have a guardian, and they may select their own guardian. The court granted their request.  The estate would linger in the courts into 1801.

The exact date of George’s death is not known, however; it was before September 1798. His place of burial is also not known. He was known to be living at Hopewell Township, Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania, at the time of his death.

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
