John Haven was born about 1740 possibly on the New River, Montgomery County, Virginia. He married Mary (last name unknown) sometime before 1761. On 7 September 1773, he was appointed Constable of New River, Fincastle (Montgomery) County. He was at the battle of Point Pleasant 10 October 1774 and a member of Captain Joseph Cloyd's Company of Fincastle (Montgomery) County Militia in 1774.
He was a member of John Taylor's Company of Montgomery County Militia 1774 to 1777. In 1779, he signed a $1,000 bond stating that he was not a Tory; he went to trial and was acquitted when he signed the Oath of Allegiance. He died in Montgomery County, Virginia before 9 November 1780. His will was probated 6 August 1782 and lists his wife Mary and seven children: Richard, James, Rebecca, Margaret, Ruth, Rhodey and Elizabeth.

The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
