Author: MAJ Benjamin Chiles Pollard USAR

Absalom Pollard Sr. was born on 1 January 1760 in New Kent, New Kent County, Virginia.

He enlisted in the 1st Virginia State Regiment in March 1777 at the age of 17. Although he enlisted in March, he does not show up on the payroll until October 1777 as a Corporal in Captain John Camps Company. He was at Valley Forge serving in Camp’s Company and later under Captain Jacob Valentine. He fought with the 1st Virginia at the Battle of Monmouth in June 1778 and the Battle of Stony Point in July 1779.

His three-year enlistment was due to expire in 1780, and he returned to Virginia in late 1779 as the 1st Virginia was ordered back to the state. He likely participated in the battle of Yorktown as a member of the Virginia Militia in 1781. He applied for and received a warrant for 200 acres on the Little Barren River on 11 May 1784 at Richmond, Virginia, for three years of service as a Corporal in the Virginia Line, as well as receiving a pension for his service in 1830.

He moved to Amherst County, Virginia, about the time he married Leanna Banks, daughter of Linn Banks (P-108304) and Sarah (Proctor) Banks in 1782. Their first four children were born in Amherst County. It is believed they moved to Lincoln County between 1787 and 1789 (a Virginia County until 1792 when Kentucky became a State). Later, this section of Lincoln County, where the todays City of Lancaster is situated, became Garrard County, Kentucky, in 1796, where they had their next eight children. Their known children were:

  1. Abner was born in 1785 in Virginia and died on 1 June 1832 in Kentucky.
  2. Granville was born in 1786 in Virginia and died on 12 May 1846 in Kentucky.
  3. Stanton was born on 7 June 1787 in Virginia and died on 24 March 1875 in Kentucky.
  4. John was born on 27 December 1788 in Virginia and died on 25 February 1853 in Kentucky.
  5. Sarah was born on 7 January 1793 in Kentucky and died on 17 November 1880 in Kentucky.
  6. Leaner was born in 1794 in Kentucky and died on 18 February 1863 in Kentucky.
  7. Rueben was born on 31 December 1795 in Kentucky and died on 22 December 1861 Missouri.
  8. Malinda was born in 1796 in Kentucky and died on 9 July 1849 in Kentucky.
  9. Pamelia was born in 1797 in Kentucky and died in 1855 in Kentucky.
  10. Nancy was born on 21 March 1798 in Kentucky and died on 11 December 1874 in Kentucky.
  11. Absalom Jr. was born on 17 Nov 1799 in Kentucky and died on 5 Dec 1864 Kentucky.
  12. James was born in 1805 in Kentucky and died in 1844 in Kentucky.

He served as a Captain in the 1st Division, 2nd Brigade, and 6th Regiment of the Kentucky Cornstalk Militia in 1792.

The Patriot died on 30 August 1835, and it is believed that Absalom and Leaner were buried in what was then known as the “Old Place” mentioned in Absalom’s Will. He was buried with “Full Military Honors.” The “Old Place” bordered Sugar Creek and Steens Branch in Garrard County.

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
