Will ofJames Bishop, Sr., Dinwiddie County, VA, June2 1842 -Will Book 3, pg 668-670
Spouse: XX XX; Children: James; Armistead; William;
Author: William Moreland Bishop
Born about 1760 in the County of Dinwiddie, VA to unknown parents. Exact date of birth unknown but when he filed his pension application on 30 Aug 1832, he swore his age was 72 years old, wasn’t sure the exact date because the family “Bible with that record has been completely destroyed many years ago.” He stated he had lived all his life in Dinwiddie County. The names of his wife or his parents have not been determined since Dinwiddie County is a “burned” county where all the records were burned during the Civil War. His brother Jeremiah never married, and they are the earliest two family members proven to have been in the Revolutionary War and the oldest to have resided in Dinwiddie County all their lives.
His pension application states he served together with his brother Jeremiah in all but one tour of duty. During their last tour of duty under Capt Baker Pegram their unit was in Petersburg VA on their way to Yorktown when word was received that Lord Cornwallis had surrendered on 19 Oct 1781, and their unit was immediately disbanded and the troops returned home.
He was enrolled in 1777 serving 15 months and few days, under Capt. Peter Goodwyn, Capt John Burwell, Capt R. Jones, Capt Wm Meanly, Capt J R Davis, Ensign John Jackson and Captain Baker.
When James Bishop Sr died on 2 Feb 1845, he left a full Will naming his children: His sons, James Bishop, Wyatt Bishop, Robert Bishop, Armistead Bishop and William Bishop; and his daughters: Susan Bishop Jackson and his deceased daughter, Nancy “Ann” Bishop Jackson.
The burial site of James Bishop Sr and his brother Jeremiah has not been determined, but it is believed they, along with many other family members are buried on the Bishop property in the Sapony District of Dinwiddie County, VA. Find A Grave Memorial #134570645. We family members have visited the site on several occasions, found one headstone and one footstone of a later family member, and several indentations in the earth, indicating other graves were there. The property is now used by a Hunt Club and harvested for pulp wood.
Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!
Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
