Michael Carpenter was born in 1735 at Orange County (Co), Virginia (VA) to parents –Johann Zimmerman family better known as/John Carpenter [Sr. (I) (1705-1782)] and Anna Barbara Kirker/Kerker (1709-1787), residents of Culpeper Co, during the Revolutionary War. Orange Co formed 1734 from Spotsylvania; Culpeper Co formed 1749 from Orange; and, Madison Co was formed 1792 from Culpeper.

A Map of First Patents of Land in Madison Co, VA was compiled and published during 1940 by D. R. Carpenter, a Certified Engr. VA.346 and made available at the Madison County Public Library, Inc. at 402 N. Main St., Madison, VA 22727. John Carpenter’s 20 Jun 1733 tract was mapped at the top of Gaar Mountain on 150 acres neighboring Andreas/Andrew Gaar’s line and Michael Koch/Cook’s 224 acre tract.

At age 22, Michael married Maria Crisler Zimmerman/Mary Crisler Carpenter during 1757 at (1740) Hebron Lutheran Church in Madison Co, VA’s valley of the Robinson River and White Oak Run. Maria Crisler Carpenter was identified as a sponsor with her brother, Heinerich/Henry Crisler at separate baptisms held at Hebron Church on 18 Aug 1757 and for her sister, Dorothea Crisler Broyles and her husband Nicolaus’s son -Daniel and, daughters -Elisabetha on 15 May 1760, Phebe on 30 Jul 1773; and, Maria Crisler Carpenter’s brother Johann Georg Crisler and wife Anna Magdalina Smith’s daughter Loocy b. 14 Sep 1787 and bp. 28 Oct 1787; source, “Hebron” Baptismal Register of the Lutheran Church in Madison Co, VA, 2nd Edition, transcribed (2004) by John Blankenbaker at PO Box 120, Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania (PA) 19317, pgs 3,4 and 9. Late in 1775, Hebron’s Reverend Jacob Franck commenced as pastor at the church and baptized on 5 Nov, Michael Carpenter and wife, Maria Crisler Carpenter’s son Moses Zimmerman/Carpenter with sponsors: John Gaar, Maria’s cousin and Elis. Gaar Fischer, Maria’s cousin who married Adam. The remaining baptized children of our couple, Maria Crisler and Michael Carpenter were recorded as Solomon bp. 20 Nov 1761; Dinah bp. 15 Jun 1764; Rebecca bp. 14 Jun 1767, d. 1768; Andreas/Andrew bp. 19 Jul 1770, d. 1771; Ephraim bp. 26 Aug 1781; Aaron bp. 18 Oct 1773, sponsors: Wilhelm Carpenter, his brother and Heinerich/Henry Crisler, her brother and Margaretha Willheit Gaar, her cousin-in-law married John and Elis. Most of the mapped Robinson River valley surnamed families, shared allied kinship lines of baptism, communion and marriage at (1740) “Hebron” Church mapped upon the 28 Sep 1728 Andrew Kirker/Kerker 1,245 acre tract drawn by D. R. Carpenter.

At age 46, Michael Carpenter was identified listed in Virginia Militia Draft Classes usually numbered 15 males, from which 1 individual’s name was drawn to serve from Culpeper County during Jan 1781 for recruiting the state’s quota of troops to serve in the Continental Army; source, Virginia Society Daughters of the American Revolution, Ancestor Search – Descendants Database – Ancestor #: A019491.

On 24 March 1808, the 26 Nov 1805 signed and sealed will of Michael Carpenter, deceased, age 73 was exhibited and proved by the oaths of Godfrey Yager, Ephraim Utz and Lewis Utz and thereto ordered recorded at Court held in Madison Co, VA - John Walker, Jr. Clerk for Madison Co, Court, VA; source, Madison County, VA Will Book 2, (1804-1813) Filmed by the Genealogical Society of Utah on 11 Oct 1949, Film No. JR945 [Frame 422 of 554].
