John Angell was born on 11 June 1762 to Charles Angell and Sybella Elizabeth Washington Cummings in Dan River, Stokes (now Surry) County, North Carolina.
John enlisted at the end of November, 1779 as a private in the North Carolina Militia as a substitute for Charles Angel. He served under Captain Salathal Martin of Colonel Hampton’s regiment for 4 months and 8 days, receiving his discharge on 23 March 1780. He served six weeks as a substitute for John Hutchins under Captain Minor Smith, Major Winston, of Colonel Campbell’s regiment. In June 1780, he enlisted as a volunteer under Captain Bostick. He was in the battles at King’s Mountain and Camden and was wounded in the left arm. He was called-out three times, again in 1781 under Captain Bostick, volunteering as a light horseman under Captain Hill including service at Wilmington, NC in two battles.
He married Mary Polly Griner on 25 February 1779 in Surry County, NC. They had five sons: Joshua, Mathias, Berry, Charles and Henry Hampton who married Mary Elizabeth Cass. They resided in Surry County until his death on 05 Jul 1843 at Flat Rock, NC.
After the war John became a Baptist minister serving at Flat Rock, Surry County, NC for over 40 years.
John’s Revolutionary War service is documented with a pension (W20622), Bounty Land Warrant (30602-16055) and as a DAR Ancestor A002805.

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
