Author: William Lee Anderson III
Jacob Plonk II was born in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, about 1747. He migrated to NC with his parents about 1766. His 1832 pension application indicates that he served three tours of duty during the American Revolution:
In 1776, he served 3 months during the Rutherford campaign against the Cherokee Indians. He was stationed at McGaughey’s Fort, near present-day Rutherfordton, and at McFadden’s Fort on Mountain Creek in present-day Rutherford County.
In the summer and autumn of 1780, he was in a unit commanded by Captain George Taylor under the command of Brigadier General William Davidson. He made shoes for soldiers. That is consistent with October-December 1780 when Davidson was at Camp New Providence where senior officers reported a shortage of shoes. There is a tradition that Jacob Plonk traced the feet of soldiers to make well-fitted shoes.
In the autumn of 1781, he joined a unit commanded by Colonel Phifer in the campaign which successfully drove the British out of Wilmington.
Jacob Plonk II’s service is supported by the testimony of veteran Peter Forney and Captain William Moore. It took courage to be a Patriot in the South Fork River region because there were many prominent and influential Loyalists who lived nearby.
Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!
Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
