Author: CMSgt Robert Lee Knott Jr

Hugh Bramblett was born about 1757 in Prince William Co., Virginia to Reuben and Margaret (Darnell) Bramblett.  Hugh married Nany Ann Parker about 1778 in Fauquier Co., Virginian.  Hugh Bramblett died 25 July 1818 in Bourbon Co., Kentucky.  His wife died 14 November 1839, probably in Scott County, Kentucky.  They had the following children:  Catherine, born 1780; Alice, born 1781; Susannah born 1782; Martin, born 1784; Robert, born 1785; LeAnn born 1789; John, born 1790; William, born 1795; Permelia (Millie) born 1797; Nancy Annie, born 1799 and Margaret born 1800.

Hugh Bramblett was left 100 acres by his father, Reuben, on Pickett Creek in the years of 1813 and 1814 in Bourbon Co Kentucky.  Before Hugh moved to Kentucky he was living in Virginia where he is recorded as being in the Rev War. He was in Capt Benjamin Harrison’s Company of Virginia Volunteers, the source being the book Virginians in the Revolution on page 88.

The following was taken from the Pension application of Corp. Benjamin Martin:

Hugh Bramblett is listed on the 1777 muster roll of this Company. This is Martin's account in his own words of the Tour that Hugh Bramblett was on with the Fauqier County Volunteers.

"1777, Early in Sept. Fauquier Co. was called on for volunteers to reinforce General Washington's army. I volunteered and was enlisted under Capt. Benjamin Harrison, I served as a corporal, James Key was Lieutenant, we were formed into a regiment and commanded by Col. Martin Pickett and marched from Fauquier Court House the middle of September We passed through Leesburg, and then to Nolen's Ferry on Potomac, then to Fredricktown in Maryland, then through Little York and Lancaster in Pennsylvania, we met General Wain's [sic, Anthony Wayne's] men that were wounded at Peolia, going to Lancaster, and we joined Gen. Washington's army the day after the battle of Germantown. Our regiment camped near the Virginia Regulars commanded by General Charles Scott and Colonial Thomas Marshall, as soon as the British left Germantown, a detachment was ordered to Germantown. I was one of them, we marched over the Battleground. I noticed a gate below a house the called Chew's house, the gate was very much shattered with grape or lanes shot and blood of men that had been killed was plainly to be seen on the ground, soon after that he British commenced a heavy cannonade on our forts on the Delaware River from their Shipping in order to force their way up to Philadelphia. I was with a detachment near Germantown when the Americans blew up a large British Ship and tremendous was the explosion it made. We continued in service three months and were discharged about the middle of December a little before the army went into Winter Quarters at Valley Forge. I received a discharge from Capt. Benjamin Harrison."

Taken from the Pension application of Benjamin Parker

This is Parker's account of the same tour

(About the 1st of September following he started from Fauquier County and marched through Lee's [word obliterated] Fredericks Town then through Little York and then to Lancaster - Benjamin Harrison was the Captain of the company. We remained in Lancaster several days when we had orders to march to Philadelphia - we started from Lancaster under same officers - and marched own towards Philadelphia - we got to Head Quarters the day after the battle was fought at Germantown [October 4th, 1777] where we joined the Army under the command of General Washington - Then we moved with the whole Army to the White Plains where we remained until the last of November following when we were discharged - he served three months on this first tour).

Hugh Bramblett was listed in US Revolutionary War Rolls, 1775-1783, Virginia, Western Battalion, 1781-1782 (Folder 341). This was a list of Captain Benjamin Harrison’s Company of Volunteers from Fauquier Co., Virginia.

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
