Christoffel Leiss was born March 7, 1751 in Marienburg, Germany the son of Johann Peter & Catharine Elizabeth (Mann) Leiss. Christoffel Leiss at the age of two, along with his parents and his two older brothers Heinrich and Johann Peter, arrived at the port of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on September 29, 1753 aboard the ship Rowand. Shortly thereafter the family settled in Tulpehocken Twp., Berks County, PA. ` Christoffel Leiss was married three times. His first marriage took place about 1771 to Maria Elisabeth Trautmann (1748-1812) the daughter of Johannes & Eva Elisabetha (Bauer) Trautmann. Maria Elizabeth was a native of the Tulpehocken area and the mother of Christoffel’s seven children: Maria Elisabetha, Eva Elisabetha, Catharine, Elisabeth, Christine, Johannes and Anna Maria. On June 27, 1813 Christoffel Leiss married his second wife, Catharina Schaffer and on May 1, 1817 he married his third wife Catharina Stein. Christoffel Leiss was a farmer his entire life. He died in Tulpehocken Twp., Berks County, PA probably at his plantation on June 9, 1826. He and his first wife Maria Elisabeth (nee Trautmann) are buried at the St. John’s Host Church Cemetery, Tulpehocken Twp., Berks County, PA. ` During the Revolutionary War as “Stoffel Leis” he took the Oath of Allegiance on May 30, 1778 in Berks County, PA. Christoffel Leiss was a private under Captain Wendel Weaver in the 2nd Battalion, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania Militia. Near the end of the war he was elected as a Lieutenant in the 2nd Battalion, Lancaster County Militia.

The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
