Friederick Maier was born about 1751 in Bern Twp. (now Upper Bern Twp.), Berks County, PA. He was the son of Friederick & Barbara (Young) Maier. His parents were from Germany, the date of their arrival in Pennsylvania is unknown. His father was a farmer on the frontier in Bern Twp., Berks County, PA. Thirty years earlier the area where the Maier family lived would have been uninhabited. On June 29 1754, just when the French & Indian War was getting underway a raiding party of Indians massacred his parents and a younger sibling. His three older siblings were taken by the Indians as prisoners. Young Friederick Maier was tomahawked / scalped by the Indians however, he did survive. ` Friederick Maier was rescued by a neighbor, Jacob Kauffman who had the farm next to the Maier homestead. Friederick was raised as a member of the Jacob Kauffman family and when he became of age he started farming the land that his father had started to clear so many years before. On May 5, 1779 (Christ Lutheran Church Records – Stouchsburg, PA), Friederick Maier married Maria Magdalena Miller (born 1764) in Tulpehocken Twp., Berks County PA. She was the daughter of Matthias & Susannah Catharina (Mueller) Mueller. Friederick was the father of ten children: George, Frederick, Jacob, Maria, Magdalena “Molly”, Sarah, Philip, Johannes, Catharina and Elisabeth. Friederick was a farmer his entire life in Bern Twp. (now Upper Bern Twp.), Berks County, PA. Friederick Maier died at his homestead in Upper Bern Twp. on December 13, 1829. His wife was still living in March of 1829 when he wrote his will, the date of her death is unknown. Friederick is buried at St. Michaels Lutheran Church Cemetery, Tilden Twp., Berks County, PA. His wife is probably buried there also, but not records survive to prove this. ` During the Revolutionary War Friederick Maier served as a private in Captain Filbert’s Company and also Captain Shable’s Company, Berks County, Pennsylvania Militia. ` Today the family name can be found spelled as Maier, Meyer and Moyer.
Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!
Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
