Johann Peter leiss was born April 17, 1725 in Zinhain (near Marienburg), Germany, the son of Joh. Theiss & Anna Lehna (Bender) Leiss. Peter Leiss was first married to Catharine Elizabeth Mann, daughter of Johann Christ & Anna Maria (Rubsamen) Mann. Peter Leiss and Catharine Elizabeth were the parents of six children: Heinrich, Johann Peter, Christoffel (born in Germany) and Anna Maria, Johann Adam and Catharine Elizabeth (born in Tulpehocken Twp., Berks County, PA). ` Johann Peter Leiss and his family arrived at the port of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on September 29, 1753 aboard the ship Rowand. Soon afterwards they settled in Tulpehocken Twp., Berks County, PA. Peter was a blacksmith and innkeeper. After the death of his first wife he married on April 21, 1781, Susannah Mueller the widow of Heinrich Mueller. After his second marriage Peter moved to the area of Newmanstown in what is now Lebanon County, PA. Peter died in early 1804 in Lancaster County (now Lebanon County.), PA. His place of burial is unknown. ` During the Revolutionary War, Peter Leiss took the Oath of Allegiance on January 26, 1778 in Berks County, PA, he also paid the Supply Tax – 1779 in Tulpehocken Twp., Berks County, PA. With these two acts he proved his patriotism toward the revolutionary cause.

Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
