Johannes George Althaus was the son of Johan George Althaus who arrived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania from Germany on October 28, 1738 aboard the ship St. Andrew, Ships Master – John Stedman. Johan George Althaus came from the village of Elselfin in the area of Willenstein, province of Westphalia near the Rhine River. After arriving in Pennsylvania he settled in Bern Twp., Lancaster County (now Berks County), PA. ` Johannes George Althaus was born in Berks County, PA on May 5, 1744 and was a farmer in Bern Twp., Berks County, PA his entire life. His farm covered over 300 acres and the old Homestead was on the Tulpehocken creek opposite of where the Berkshire Country Club is located today. He married Maria Barbara Herbine (1741-1822) who was a native of Oley Twp., Berks County, PA. He was the father of five children: Johannes, Peter, Maria, Catherine and Margaret. Johannes George died January 7, 1811 and along with his wife is buried in the Epler’s Reformed Church Cemetery, Bern Twp., Berks County, PA. ` During the Revolutionary War Johannes George served as a private in Captain Soder’s Company, Berks County Militia. He Took the Oath of Allegiance to the state of Pennsylvania on June 29, 1778.
