Andreas Ziegler was born on 30 November 1744, in Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania, and would become a blacksmith by trade, and a farmer.
In 1768 in Philadelphia County, he was married to Henrietta Sophia Neidig, who was born on 25 July 1749, in Baden-Wuerttemberg, Germany. She was the daughter of Daniel and Ann Margaretha Neidig, who came to America in 1754 when Henrietta Sophia was five years old.
Around 1772, Andreas purchased 204 acres that sat between Rockland and Longswamp Townships, Berks County, Pennsylvania. This is where he built his home and raised his family, which included his eleven known children.
On 9 June 1777, Andreas took the Oath of Allegiance in Berks County. Throughout the American Revolution, he is in the Berks County Militia, serving in the 1st Battalion under Captain Folock’s company, then Captain Wick’s company. From 1779 to 1781, he is paying a “Supply Tax” to aid the war effort.
After the Revolutionary War, his farm grew to 335 acres, which included a blacksmith shop, eight horses, and wagons.
He died on 28 February 1800 at the age of 55 years. In his Last Will and Testament, his request was that “my dear beloved wife Henrietta Sophia remain in the home and taken care of until her death.”
Henrietta Sophia never remarried and lived the next 29 years on their farm. She died on 5 August 1829 at the grand age of 80 years. On her headstone, it states, “With her marriage to Andreas, they leave 11 children, 86 grandchildren, and 20 great-grandchildren."
Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!
Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
