Author: Mark Andrew Davis

Jonathan Paul Yerkes was born on 5 December 1759 at Moreland, Pennsylvania, the son of Titus and Margaret (Paul) Yerkes. He made his living as a farmer and miller. After moving his family to Wayne County, he constructed a sawmill and, later, a gristmill.

His name is found on one Muster Roll for the Company of Captain Andrew of Montgomery County, Pennsylvania Militia, commanded by Colonel George Smith. The handwritten muster roll says Montgomery County; however, the Pennsylvania Archives Sixth Series, Vol I, page 645, says Philadelphia County. It must be noted this muster roll is dated 1786, three years after the end of the Revolution. It would be advisable to search for additional rolls from 1783.

He was married about 1789 to Elizabeth Jarrett. Their known children: Joseph, born 11 September 1790; Titus, born 25 December 1791; Jacob, born 9 February 1794; Mary Ann, born 24 January 1798 (wife of Elijah Clark); Nathan, born 16 July 1800; Margaret, born 28 December 1802; Sebastian, born 11 June 1805; David, born 23 April 1807; and Hannah, born in 1811 (wife of Daniel Sherwood).

Jonathan died on 27 March 1835 in Damascus Township, Wayne County, Pennsylvania, and is buried at Overlook Cemetery.

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
