Adrian (aka Adriaan) Wynkoop Maj (1st) NY Militia Rgt. of Foot – Militia Levies was born on 21 Aug 1726 to parents recorded as Cornelius Wynkoop (1688-c1747) and, Hendrika Newkirk of Marbletown. The couple married on 14 Dec 1711. Hendrika was characterized as apparently, a daughter of Adrian Gerritszoon and Lysbet Nieukerk (aka Newkirk). Adrian’s siblings were recorded as Judith bp. 31 Aug 1712; Elizabeth bp. 9 Jan 1715; Cornelia bp 17 Mar 1717; Johannes bp. 16 Aug 1719, mentioned in his father’s will in 1739; Catharina bp. 18 Feb 1722; Leah bp. 31 May 1724, died in infancy; Leah bp. 7 Jan 1728, mentioned in her father’s will; Cornelius C., bp. 5 Nov 1732 m. Maria C. Ruehl; and twins, Petrus bp. 22 Dec 1734, m. Adrian was recorded to have married Catherine Louw Wynkoop on 25 Oct 1754 at Kingston, Ulster Co, NY. His death was recorded during 6 May 1790, at his residence in Hurley, Ulster County (Co,) New York (NY), Ibid, pg 24.
Adrian Wynkoop and a brother, Cornelius C. Wynkoop, furnished American Revolutionary War service as Ulster Co, NY Militia Levies. Adrian’s brother, Cornelius (C.) Adrian’s synopsized biography was published in the online book entitled: HURLEY NEW YORK – A BRIEF HISTORY by Deana F. Decker, 2013 e-book edition, publ. by The Historical Press, Charleston, SC 29403, see: Chapter Two, The Great Hardenburgh (Land) Patent, and Hurley Houses – Maj Adrian Wynkoop. This biographic sketch has misinformation that Adrian’s brother was Cornelius D. Wynkoop. Cornelius D.’s parents were proved to be Dirck (Derrick) Wynkoop (1698-1763) and Geertje “Gertrude” Kool [aka Cool /Cole (1703-1747)], who were married on 3 Jul 1725 at Kingston, Ulster Co, NY. During 1775, Adrian was made a member of the committee (cmte) in Hurley to select delegates to attend the New York provincial convention. He had been commissioned a Maj of the (1st) NY Militia Rgt., raised for Ulster Co, NY commanded by Col Johannes Snyder, Sr (1722-1794). Adrian commanded the artillery unit that defended Kingston (Oct 1777) and delayed the British army advance into Hurley, saving valuable wheat fields and crops from burning; source, HURLEY NEW YORK – A BRIEF HISTORY, 2013 e-book edition, publ. by The Historical Press, Charleston.
At age 64, Adrian died at his Ulster Co, NY farm home and was buried in the Old Hurley Burial Grounds, mapped at Latitude: 41.92642, Longitude: -74.06293, a short distance from the direct access on Main Street, Hurley. Adrian’s upright headstone was photographed standing adjacent to a pillow style, stone slab (also, photographed) inscribed, “ADRIAAN WYNKOOP”, Maj Ulster County Militia 1st Regiment, Revolutionary War, Aug 21 1726 – May 16 1795; source, Find A Grave Memorial# 19060402.
