It is believed that John Wright's father, John, was born about 1719 in Chester County, PA and died about 1745. Nothing is known about his wife. The Old and New Monongahela by John S. Van Voorhis states John Wright died May 1, 1833. However, his grave marker states his DOD was 27 May 1833 at 87 years 11 months and 20 days. John Wright's American Revolutionary war record at the NSDAR states he lived in Westmoreland County, PA. His rank was soldier. His wife was Hannah Tanner. His service description states he fought under Capt. John Van Meter. The Van Meters came to Pennsylvania with the Swans and Hughes families from Virginia.
John Wright married Hannah Tanner, daughter of Phillip Tanner, Sr. and Elizabeth Dickey Tanner. The Old and New Monongahela states that "John and Hannah had 5 sons: James, Phillip, Joseph, John and Hugh. Their descendants lived on the Wright farm, known as the 'Forks of Yough', in the house long known as the Hassler House. Their grandson, Ezra, son of Hugh and Polly Smith Wright, was cousin on his father's side of Judge Wright who so long resided in Washington, D.C.
