Author: Ethan A. Stewart, Sr.
Joseph 6 Woodworth, son of Lemuel 5 and Elizabeth (Joseph 4.3.2. Walter 1): born in Lebanon, CT. on 29 May 1758 and died in Conewango, Cattaraugus County, New York on 21 May 1842 (per photo of grave stone). Joseph is buried in Elm Creek Cemetery, Napoli, New York.

While living in Lebanon, CT., Joseph lived in the Third Society called Goshen. They lived along the 10 mile river on the east side of the highway.

Joseph married his first wife before 1780, Sally Gould who died about 1800. He married (2) First Baptist Church, Bangall, Dutchess County, New York on 8 February 1799 (per Pension Application) Wayty (spelling on Pension Record) (Parks) Couse, born 1771 and died 5 July1852, daughter of Whitten and Mary (Sutherland) Parks. She married (1) William Couse and had 3 children: James Couse born 1 February 1786; Margaret born 10 February 1793 and Nancy born 24 October 1790.

Joseph Woodworth enlisted 1 January 1776 in Lebanon, CT., and served one year as a private in Captain Dyer’s Company, Colonel John Durkee’s CT. Regiment. During that service he was in the Battle of Trenton, taking of the Hessians and the Battle of Harlem. (Pension Records). He applied for a pension from Madison County, New York on 25 April 1818, and age 60 years at the rate of $8 a month. In 1820 his occupation was a laborer, and he stated there were nine members of his family and listed the children. He said that he could support the four oldest, but not the youngest. William Atwater Woodworth states Joseph was at the Battle of Bunker Hill, was in the New Jersey retreat of December 1776, the Battle of Trenton, Princeton, Brandywine, Saratoga, surrender of Burgoyne. Joseph was discharged 9 January 1777 at the Delaware River in Pennsylvania.

In 1790 Joseph is living in Ballstown, Albany County, New York. In 1800 he is living in Renslaerville, Albany County, New York. 1810 Joseph is in Jefferson County, New York. In 1818 he is located in Smithfield, Madison County, New York and that is where he applied for his pension. 1830 he is living in Fenner County, New York. 1840 Joseph is in Conewango Township, Cattaraugus County, New York

Joseph’s pension records as of 1835 list him as a private living in Madison County. His annual allowance was $96.00 and he has received a total of $1,186.66. Joseph was placed on the pension rolls on September 30, 1818.

Joseph’s widow Wayty was allowed a pension for application executed 13 February 1851 at which time she was 79 years. She was residing in Napoli, Cattaraugus County, New York. Wayty stated she and Joseph Woodworth were married 8 February 1799 in Dutchess County, New York. Her sons Joseph and Hilon were present when she made application (#6854)
