Author: Daniel E. Phillips
Capt. William Witcher, Sr, Ancestor No. P-322956
Capt. (later Major) William Witcher, Sr. was born in 1724 in Liverpool, Lancashire, England. The date of his arrival in America is unknown. He married Rachel Ann Majors in April, 1745 in Chatham, VA and fathered eight children. He was serving as a vestryman of Camden Parish when Pittsylvania County, VA was formed in 1767. He was elected to the county Committee of Safety in 1775, and soon after appointed as a Captain in the Pittsylvania County Militia. He led a company to Fort Patrick Henry in what is now Kingsport, TN in 1776 on an expedition against the Cherokee. He returned home afterward and was appointed a Justice of The Peace by Governor Patrick Henry. He returned to service in 1780 and led companies into battle in the following engagements:
1. Stono Ferry, SC
2. Eutaw Springs, SC
3. Guilford Courthouse, NC
4. Cowpens, SC
He returned home to his farm in Chatham, VA, where he died on June 8, 1808. He is buried in the Witcher family cemetery overlooking the farm. Capt. William Witcher’s children include:
1. Daniel Witcher (b. 1746)
2. John Witcher (b. 1748)
3. Ephriam Witcher (b. 1749)
4. James Witcher (b. 1750)
5. Caleb Witcher (b. 1756)
6. William Witcher, Jr (b. 1758)
7. Elizabeth Witcher (Razer) (b. 1759)
8. Rachel Witcher (Morrison) (b. 1764)
A roster of William Witcher’s company lists his sons Daniel, John, Ephriam, and James as being included when the company was commissioned in 1776.

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
