The following biography was edited and augmented by PRS staff.

Jacob Wiseman was born about 1730 in England.

He married Elizabeth Henderson in 1763 [or 1773] in Currituck County, North Carolina. It is possible he had an earlier marriage. Together, they had the following known children, all of whom were named in Jacob's Last Will and Testament.1

  • Isaac was born in 1766 and married Elizabeth Stonewall Owen.
  • Jacob was born about 1767 and married Margaret Harper.
  • Mary “Polly” was born on 16 February 1760 and married Jeremiah Green.
  • Martha married Thomas Willis
  • Elender or Eleanor married William Line.
  • Jane was born about 1778 and married [?] Line.
  • Josiah was born on 29 January 1783.
  • John was born on 24 January 1780 and married 1) Anna Hunt and 2) Sallie Finley.
  • Jonathan

During the American Revolution, Jacob contributed to the war effort by supplying provisions to North Carolina, Virginia, and South Carolina militias. His service is verified through multiple receipts of payment issued by militia commanders.2  Additionally, Jacob is listed as a parolee from North Carolina, likely due to his capture during the events leading up to the Battle of Guilford Courthouse. A transcribed article by Kathleen Wyche provides details about his release based on documents found among the papers of Charles, Lord Cornwallis, the British commander.3

The Patriot died sometime after 24 December 1807 in Rowan County, North Carolina.

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
