Francis Winkler was in Rowan County by 1772 along with his father , based on tax records; his land improvement was claimed by his father Ludwig in 1778 along with several other claims . At the onset of the Revolutionary War, Francis returns to PA and serves in the PA militia along with his father in law Rheinhart Bott . Francis Winkler, Ensign of the First Company, Fifth Battalion, York Co., PA Militia under Lt. Col. Jacob Remer and Captain Thomas White, 1779-1782 Ref. Pennsylvania Archives, 6th Series, Vol. 2, Pg. 535 After the end of the war Francis moves his entire family to Rowan County NC in and is listed on the 1784 tax list. 1784 Rowan County List of Taxables of Capt Frederick Smith -Franses Winkler:

The 1791 Tax List of Capt. William Millsap's Company shows Francis as living in the Potts Creek and Beaverdam Creek area of present day Davidson County North

In 1806 there are in the Rowan County court records, a court ordered action for the division of Francis Winkler’s property into 13 lots. All twelve children are named and Hannah Owens is listed as the widow, indicating that the first wife had died and Francis had remarried. The court attorney filings continue through 1818 and leave an excellent record of the heirs and their spouses.
