Author: Ed Lary
The Revolutionary War Service Record for Uriah Wilcox was summarized very well by The Adjutant General, HP McCain, on January 21, 1916 in response to an inquiry from an individual in St. Lawrence County, NY. Below are selected sections of his letter, not necessarily verbatim:

“The records show that Uriah Wilcox served as a 2nd lieutenant in Captain Christopher Webber’s Company, Colonel David Hobart’s Regiment of New Hampshire Militia, which joined the Continental Army in June, 1777. He is shown to have been engaged July 21, 1777 and discharged September 22, 1777. The records also show that Uriah Wilcox served as a first lieutenant in Bellow’s Regiment, New Hampshire Militia which reinforced the garrison at Ticonderoga in June, 1778, showing that he was engaged June 28 and was discharged July 9.”

In his book “The History of Newport, New Hampshire: From 1766 to 1878” author Edmund Wheeler includes the following on Uriah Wilcox and his family:

“Jesse, Uriah, and Phinehas Wilcox, and Mrs. Samuel Hurd, children of Stephen Wilcox, of Killingworth, Conn., were among the very earliest settlers of the town [Newport, NH]. The father gave them 300 acres of land apiece, and came up and assisted them in starting in life. They came in June, 1766……..Uriah Wilcox, a brother of Jesse, Sen; settled on the A. Hurd place on the Goshen road. He was prominent in the early affairs of the town, was a selectman eleven years, several years a representative……Married Hannah Wright, of Killingworth, Conn.; m., 2d, Hannah Bartlett, of Unity [NH].”

Uriah (Urias) Wilcox was born in Killingworth, CT on March 13, 1748/49, the son of Stephen and Mary [Pierson] Wilcox. He married, 2nd, Hannah Bartlett on December 9, 1783 in Unity, NH. They were married 39 years and raised 11 children, all born in Newport, NH. Uriah died March 19, 1822; Hannah died September 17, 1843. They are both buried in the Pine Street West Cemetery in Newport. NH.

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
