WHITE, SAMUEL, (Franklin Co.) [39.91922 -83.04990]

Born in Massachusetts March 16, 1758 to parents Alexander (1709-1776) and Mary McMurtrie (1711-1781) White of Suxxex Co. New Jersey. Served as a soldier for seven years in Revolutionary War, Was scalped at Stony Point on September 7, 1776 by Indian, and left for dead. He married Jane Stewart (1764-1839); children: James, Samuel, John, Elizabeth, Sarah, Alexander, William, Rebecca, Jacob and George. He Died from injuries received in a runaway at Briggsdale and was Buried at Union Methodist Cemetery, Columbus, Franklin Co., OH. GM Rev Grave Committee with bronze maker May 30, 1912. After the Revolutionary War he lived in Sussex Co, NJ for five years, in Hardy Co, Virginia about eighteen years, and in 1805 he moved to Franklin Township, Franklin Co, OH. Samuel and Jane took only two of their youngest children with them to OH in 1804. He was approximately 47 years old after trekking from Western Virginia, to Indiana, back to Ohio. He and Jane had produced 11 children, 9 of them living, ranging from James Stewart White, and Samuel M. White. Except for James Stewart White and Samuel White, all the children were born in hardy Co, VA. One last son, George W. White, was born in Franklin Township, Franklin, OH. Samuel White and Jane Stewart lived on the "Big Run" near the Scioto and Olentangy river from 1805 until they died. They are buried on the land given by their son, Samuel M. White, for the church and graveyard called Old Union, located on Frank Road a mile east of Briggsdale. This pioneer cemetery still remains and is called Union Methodist Cemetery today. The two churches built successfully at this location have long since disappeared. Cemetery notes and/or description: The Cemetery remained after the Union Methodist Church moved. There has not been an authorized burial in this cemetery since 1914.
