Author: John Robert Turner
Nathaniel Whitaker was born 10 June, 1758 and died 27 October, 1841.

He was from Bernards Township, Somerset County, NJ and progressed from Private to Sergeant during the war. He enlisted in November 1775 and was posted to the First Battalion NJ under Captain Ten Eyck. In 1776 he went to Stony Point, NY to remove cannon. In 1777 he was at Newark, Elizabethtown, Plainfield, Piscataway and Haddonfield. 1778 found him in Princeton as well as nearby the Battle of Red Bank.

He remained in Bernards Township after the war where he married Hannah Drake. His marker indicates a second wife, Ruth Haines as well as his daughter Sarah Whitaker and her husband Garret Voorhees.
