Author: Fredrick Murray Carrington, Ph. D.

The progenitor of this family, Edward Wale (1640-1719), immigrated (date unknown) to the Colonies from England.   Settling in Somerset, Maryland, "Edward Wale and Elizabeth Ratcliff were married at Pocomoke by Mr. Wm. Stevens, one of his Lordship's Justices of the Peace, for ye county 29th of January, 1669."  They had several children, one of which was a son, Nathaniel (1686-1728), who in turn had Elias (1723-1774).

Elias Whaley married Martha Dale and they had Patriot William Whaley (1750-1795).  William married Hannah Round and they proceeded to have a large family:  Esther (1770-1867); Rachel (1772-?); Mary (1772-1847); Eli (1774-1855); Rhoda (1776-?); Martha (1778-?); Hannah (1783-1860); William (1783-1844); Issac (1787-1870); Daniel (1789-1870); and, Elizabeth (1791-1853).

Patriot whaley served as a Private in the 5th, 9th, 11th, and 15th Virginia Regiments, commanded by Colonels Buford, Wallace, Cropper, and Morgan.

Reportedly, Patriot Whaley served in The Battle of Waxhaws, also known as Buford's Massacre, May 29, 1780 at Waxhaws, near Lancaster, South Carolina.  Colonel Abraham Budord led the Continental Army while Colonel Banastre Tarleton led the British forces.  Of the original 350 Colonists, 113 were killed, 150 were wounded, and 53 were reported as missing or captured.

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
