Author: Craig Paige
Myndert Wemple was born on Dec. 26, 1737, in Maryland, a son of Myndert Wemple and his wife, Sarah (Mills). He married Sarah (Vedder), on Nov. 10, 1764. They had nine children: Symon, Sarah, Myndert, Maria, John, Neeltje; Rhoda, John, and Rebecca.

Wemple served a private from 1775 to 1778 in Colonel Abraham Wemple’s second Schenectady regiment, Albany County Colonial Militia, and was under Captain John Van Petten’s company. On Aug. 11, 1777, he was in the Battle of Normanskill, under Captain Shermerhorn. In 1777, he fought in the first and second battles of Saratoga, New York. On Sept. 19 was the Battle of Freeman's Farm (First Battle of Saratoga), with Colonel Wemple commanding under Brigadier General Glover in Gate's Division. On Oct. 7, he fought in the Battle of Bemis Heights (Second Battle of Saratoga), with Colonel Wemple commanding under Brigadier General Glover in Lincoln's division. While the group did not see a large amount of action during the war, the roll that they played was important. They, and other militias in the area, formed a core of protection for the Albany area that helped keep the British Army and the Loyalist Militias from establishing a base of operations there. If a base were to be established in Albany and in the Hudson River Valley as a whole, it would serve to cut the colonies in half, greatly strengthening the British and Loyalist cause. It is not known if he collected a pension.

He died on Dec. 18, 1821, and was buried in the First Dutch Reformed Churchyard, in West Glenville, New York.

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
