Comments:
  • It is believed the marker in the Baugher ( aka Bacher ) Cemetery in Fairfield, OH is a cenotaph. Perhaps placed by a grandson. Records indicate Jacob Wiest Sr. died in Lancaster County PA in 1806 and the family did not arrive in Ohio until the 1820's

Author: Michael B. Gunn
Born in Germany, May 6, 1730. He served as a Private and Corporal in Captain Martin Bowman's Company, Pennsylvania Militia. He Married Mary Roshon (1732-1801) 1751; children: Christian. He arrived in America in 1751, living for a year in Philadelphia, then settling on a farm among the Brethren community in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Jacob paid for Mary Roshen's (1732- 1801) passage from Germany in 1752. As was often the case with immigrants, a term of indenture was entered into in exchange for paying for passage upon arrival in the colonies. This must have been a positive event for they were married a year later, in 1752, in Philadelphia. Together they produced one son, Christian, and one additional but unidentified child. In 1763 Jacob purchased 193 acres of land from Michael Baughman and 200 acres from Christian Baughman in the Cocalico Township of Lancaster Pennsylvania. It was on these lands that Jacob and his family would make home. He Died in Lancaster, PA on December 4, 1806 and Buried at Baugher Cemetery, Brook Road NW, Dumontsville, Fairfield Co., OH 43130. Cemetery notes and/or description: Until the 1930's a church stood beside Bacher-Baugher Cemetery to the south. According to local historian, Charles Goslin, this church was a combination German Reform and Presbyterian (St. Paul's German and English Evangelical Lutheran). Land was granted for the cemetery in 1847 but graves date from as early as 1806. There are four Revolutionary War veterans buried here. There are many open spaces between the tombstones indicating that there may be stones missing. Many of the stones are made from sandstone and are flaking badly and are difficult or impossible to read. A number of the stones have been repaired. Unfortunately at the back of this cemetery along the fence is a pile of stones (and pieces of stones) which have been removed from the cemetery proper.

Directions to this cemetery from Lancaster, Ohio:Take St Rt 158 north. Turn left on Ginder Road. Turn right on Brook Rd. Cemetery about 1/8 mile on left.

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
