Gilbert Weeks was born on 27 April 1741 in Oyster Bay, Queens County, New York.

He was married on 3 March 1766 in Rubout, Dutchess County, New York to Jemima van Amburgh. These are the known children of this couple. There are likely more.

  • Nancy was born in 1766 and married Robert Hustis.
  • Mary was born on 28 January 1767.
  • Chauncey was born on 24 July 1768 and Deborah Alger.
  • Jemima was christened on 17 Jun 1770.
  • Richard was born on 27 December 1771 and married Nancy Swim.
  • George Whitfield was born in 1773 and married Elizabeth Rickey.

A report by the Cornwall Precinct Committee of Safety and Observation in 1775 lists Gilbert Weeks as a signer of the Oath of Association in support of the new Continental Congress.

In a 1776 roster of the Bethlehem Company of Captain Christopher Van Duzen, we find Gilbert Weeks serving as an ensign. The company was part of the Orange County, New York Militia under the command of Colonel Jesse Woodhull.

The Patriot died on 12 May 1799 at Fishkill, Dutchess County, New York, and was buried in the churchyard of the First Reformed Dutch Church of Fishkill.

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
