Author: Jerry Ray Sayre // Jesse McIntyre III
Thomas Weakley was born about 1750 in Virginia. He was the son of John and Hannah (Robinson) Weakley. While in Virginia, he met and married Elizabeth Redding, daughter of Timothy and Mary (Spilman) Redding. Elizabeth was a descendent of the family of Welsh and German origins.

Thomas Weakley, Sr., was a private in the Rifle Battalion of Captain Joseph Crockett, Company C, 7th Virginia Regiment of Foot. Commanded by Colonel Alexander McClenahan.

Thomas first enlisted December 28, 1776. According to National Archives records, Thomas was transferred to Captain Thomas Posey’s Rifle Regiment under the command of Colonel Daniel Morgan. This Regiment was formed about June 1777 and was composed of men well known for their marksmanship. They dressed in their backwoods attire and apparently sniped the British lines.

The last mention of Thomas in the muster rolls was February 3, 1778. Since his pay was not on that record he may have served longer.

After the Revolution, Thomas took his family to Woodford County, KY in 1786. About 1800 he removed to Shelby County, KY. Thomas Weakley died on his farm near Shelbyville, KY, in October 1818. He rests beneath a new headstone provided by the local D.A.R. Isaac Shelby Chapter in what is now a cow pasture on Benson Pike, Shelbyville, KY.

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
