Biographical Sketch of Patriot William Waugh (P-314865)

William Waugh was born on 12 January 1739 in Adams County, Pennsylvania. He died 09 October 1823. He married Elizabeth Sturgeon sometime around 1768. Eliza-beth Sturgeon was born 08 January 1753 at an unknown location and died 06 September 1833.

William Waugh and Elizabeth Sturgeon had twelve children as listed below:

1. Alexander McClure Waugh – born 25 May 1770 and the 4th Great Grandfather of the submitter. This is recorded in the approved SAR Supplemental Application 31161.
2. Mary Waugh – born 03 June 1773 and married to John Cunningham.
3. William Pitt Waugh – born 28 April 1775.
4. Elizabeth Waugh – born 11 November 1776 and married to a Mr. Peden.
5. Jane Waugh – born 28 January 1782 and married to John Harper.
6. Margaret Waugh – born 23 November 1787 and married to Rev. John Hutchinson.
7. James Waugh – born 08 August 1795 and married to Elizabeth Blair.
8. John Waugh – born 28 November 1771.
9. Shannon (or Susannah) Waugh – born 18 December 1778.
10. Matilda Waugh – born 05 September 1780.
11. Samuel Waugh – born 24 November 1783.
12. Levi Waugh – born 08 February 1786.

William Waugh took the Oath of Allegiance in 1778 according to “Bedford County, Pennsylvania In The American Revolution” by James B. Whisker. He served as a Pri-vate in the York and Bedford County Militias, Pennsylvania in 1778.

At his death, he was buried, according to records, in the Hopewell Cemetery, Preble County, Ohio. The site of his death is uncertain.
