Author: James G. Carn
James Ward Jr., was born February 20, 1757, in Somers, Toland County, CT, the son of James and Bethia (Wood) Ward Sr, and died January 2, 1839. He married Hulda(h) Gibbs and they had children: Aldrick, Eliphalet, Bethia, Huldah, Dolla and Sarah. He was private in the Connecticut Line enlisting in May 1776 under Capt. Abial Pease in the regiment under Lt. Ramsey and Lt. Isaac Cameron which was commanded by Col. Erastus Wolcott of the State Troops of Connecticut. He remained in service about seven months until January 1777. He re-enlisted in 1777 and served four months under Capt. Elijah Robinson in the regiment commanded by Col. John Ely, again in the Connecticut State Troops. He was drafted in 1778 and served two months, until about September 1, under Capt. Sykes and Col. Ledyards in the regiment commanded by General Tyler and was employed in guarding Fort Trumbull. He was again drafted in 1779 and served under Captain Josiah Cameron and Lt. Noah Peas(e) and for six weeks was employed building Fort Griswold until November 1779. He was drafted for three months in 1781, but hired a substitute for this term, paying him six dollars and providing his "war accoutrements". He served a total of 1 year, 4 months and 14 days in the Continental Troops. During his service he also was marched to Rhode Island and Massachusetts and back to Connecticut. After the war he lived in New York state, then removed to Troy Township, Bradford County, PA about 1818 where he was granted a pension of $54 per annum on March 4, 1831. He may have died at Angelica, NY. Unknown burial location.

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
