Author: Dr. Michael Bernard Gunn

Born on February 12, 1767 in Upper Hanover Township, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania to parents Henry and Anna Maria __Walter. He served as a Private in the Chester County, Pennsylvania Militia, in the 5th Company of the 9th Battalion of the Chester County, Pennsylvania Militia. He married Anna Maria “Polly” Knauss (1772-1831) in 1790; children: Daniel (born 1791), Henry (born 1791), Johannes (born 1796), Elizabeth (born 1797), Sarah (born 1799), Mathias (born 1804), Jacob (born 1807) and Solomon (born 1810). He lived in Pennsylvania during the War and all of their children were born there. In about 1810 they moved to Section 26 of Elk Run Township, Columbiana County, Ohio. Mathias was a Township Trustee in 1821-1822 and owned a tavern. He died at 87 years of age on August 23, 1854 in Elk Run Township and was buried at the Bowmans Cemetery, Elk Run Township, Columbiana County, Ohio. Cemetery notes and/or description: Bowman Cemetery is located back a drive off the west side of Lusk Lock Road, north of County Road 419, outside Elkton, Ohio (Elkrun Township, Columbiana County).
