Author: SN Bennett Lee Setser

Andrew Wallace was born on 25 Sep 1748 in Rockbridge County, Virginia, the son of Peter and Margaret (Woods) Wallace.

Andrew married Catharine Parks in 1769, and they had at least one child, Mary.

Little is known about Andrew Wallace’s military and personal career. What is sure is that on 5 March 1777, he was commissioned as Captain of the 5th Company of the 8th Virginia Regiment of the Continental Line. The 8th Virginia joined General Washington’s army early in 1777 and was involved in the Battles of Brandywine on 11 September 1777 and Germantown on 4 October 1777. Shortly after the 8th Virginia Regiment fought at Monmouth on 28 June 1778, the 8th Virginia was reassigned to the 3rd Virginia Brigade under the Command of Lieutenant Colonel James Wood. His Company was detached to North Carolina on 1 May 1779. The 8th Virginia Regiment merged with the 4th Virginia Regiment on 12 May 1779 and left existence.

Captain Andrew Wallace was one of the 79 Patriots killed in action at the Battle of Guilford Courthouse on 15 March 1781 and was presumably buried where he fell. As General Cornwallis held the day even after losing a third of his force to 93 deaths, 413 wounded, and 26 captured, the exact sites of those Patriots that died in battle are not known.

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
