LTC John/Johann Peter Wagner, Dep Commander, NY Palatine Militia was born 8 January 1722 in Stone Arabia, Tyron, NY. He was baptized the same day. He married Barbara Elizabeth Dockstader and he died 23 May 1813 in Palatine, Montgomery, NY.
He was involved in the battle of Oriskany Creek. His unit was the one most heavily involved in an ambush by Mohawk Indians and British soldiers. The militia force of three regiments, under General Nicholas Herkimer was marching o relieve the siege of Fort Stanwix (now Rome, NY). The Britsh force was under LTC Barr St. Leger. The militia regiments were commanded by General Nicholas Hekimer, a 60 year old German (Palatine German) The ambush stopped the column's movement and no relief was accomplished. However, the fighting was hand to hand for the next 24 hours. It is sometimes descried as the bloodiest battle of the Revolutionary War. While the men of the force thought they had been defeated, their actions sopped St. Leger fom advancing further. Saratoga was the next battle in NY and was the battle that encouraged the French to become an active participant.
There was a movie starring Henry Fonda and Claudette Colbert named "Drums Along the Mohawk" that describes the settlers that lived I the Mohawk Valley at that time and a bit about the battle and its aftermath. General Herkimer later died about two weeks after the battle after his leg had been amputated. John Peter Wagner was my 6th Great-Grandfather.
His son-in law was also involved in the battle. His name was Johann Georg Hohenschield.
Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!
Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
