When Nicholas Nicholase Van Petten was born on December 16, 1716, in Guilderland, New York, his father, Nicholas, was 26 and his mother, Rebecca, was 24. He married Sarah Pieterse Clement on March 19, 1744, in Schenectady, New York.

There is some confusion in the spelling of Van Patten.
The Van PattenPetten family was from the village of Petten (still on the coast of Northern Holland). So, I assume the correct spelling is Van Petten. By about 1800, most of the family was using Van Patten. As I understand it the Dutch pronunciation of Petten sounded the initial "e" more like an "a". Other spellings would appear to be clerical errors. Susan Kenyon.

Served as a private in Colonel Cuyler's regiment, New York Militia. He was in the 3rd Militia Regiment, with Winne, Featherly, Vrooman, Man. He was born and died in Guilderland, NY

I am applying to D.A.R. to attain membership, as Nicholas Arentse VanPetten is my Grandmother Barbara Mildred Forscutt's great, great, great, great grandfather through her father's, mother's, father's, father's, father's, father. Sounds confusing, but here goes: Barb Forscutt's father, John Richard Forscutt was son of Richard Forscutt and Mathilda VanPatten; Mathida was daughter of George VanPatten adn Mary E. Cochran; George VanPatten was son of Peter P VanPatten and Catherine Myers; Peter VanPatten was son of Petrus Nicholas VanPetten and Annatje Ecker; Petrus Nicolas VanPetten was son of Nicholaas Arentse VanPetten and Saartje "Sarah" Pieterse Clement; and Nicholaas Arentse VanPetten was son of Nicholaas Claase VanPetten and Rebecca Groot.

I am interested in attaining written proof of Nicholaas Arentse VanPetten's service in the Revolutionary War if you can forward some information to me I'd appreciate it! You listed some information, but I am unsure of your sources, so they are indeed what I would like assistance with, and then I can work from there, unless you have other information as well that you are willing to share.

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
