Biographical Sketch, George Thornton, Patriot

The following is largely taken from work including Thornton history by Frances Carter published in 1980.

George THORNTON, son of Anthony THORNTON Jr and Sarah TAIAFERRO born 18 November 1752, died 30 August 1853, age 101 years….. Born at ‘Ormsby’ near Guiness Bridge Caroline County, VA., married 9 January 1774 Orange Co VA., died Green Co VA (Green formerly Orange Co). Served Revolutionary War. Pension #32.366 contains some 37 pages of interesting information about George and his family, especially a hand copied page from his family Bible containing all of his childrens’ names and birthdates. In the spring of 1780 he moved his family to Orange Co, where he remained the rest of his life. In 1782 he paid taxes on 19 slaves. In his pension application he explains in depth that he felt he had enough money to keep him all of his life, but at the age of 90 he had disbursed his lands, slaves and holdings to his children for them to start their lives in more promising places. Thus we find his children in Kentucky, Missouri, Indiana, Ohio, and from coast to coast in all states. Portions of his pension record explain so clearly the part of his life during the Rev. war and later. George THORNTON married Margaret STANLEY BORN 18 June 1754 in VA., died 29 Jan 1822 Orange Co VA., the daughter of Moses STANLEY and Nancy GURNELL (sometimes found QUENELL).

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
