William Thaxton was born circa 1767 in Halifax, Virginia, British America. He served during the Revolution, He enlisted on 20 Jun 1779 with the 10th North Carolina Regiment-Continental Line in Kinston, North Carolina.
William married Sarah Gravitt 16 Aug 1783 at Caswell, North Carolina.

William died on 5 Apr 1850 at the age of 83 in Greene, Illinois, United States. He was buried at White Hall Cemetery in White Hall, Greene, Illinois.
