Author: Colin D. Wakefield

Captain Christopher Taylor, son of Henry and Sarah Taylor, was born in Bedford County, Virginia in the year 1746.

In 1768 he married Mary Edwards and between 1774 and 1776 Christopher and Mary Edwards Taylor settled on 205 acres of land here on Limestone Creek in Washington County, Tennessee. It was here in 1777 that they built a two-story log home and raised eight children. The dwelling was moved intact to a site about a mile northeast of here in 1974 to preserve it from demolition. It stands today as one of the oldest known dwellings in the historical district of Jonesborough TN.

Andrew Jackson lived in the Taylor home from 1778-79 while practicing law in Jonesborough.

According to Captain Taylor's Revolutionary War record, he had five years of constant service, starting in 1776 enlisting in the Washington County Regiment of the North Carolina Militia under Col Christian and Col John Sevier against the Cherokee Indians who were in league with the British. In 1780 he served as a Captain under Col Sevier at the Battle of King's Mountain and was present at the surrender of the British by Tory Captain Abraham DePeyster at the conclusion of the battle.

After the war, Captain Taylor returned to farm and family and represented Washington County in the first legislature for the State of Franklin.
Captain Christopher Taylor died on September 10th, 1833 in Washington County.
In life he was considered a successful farmer, horse breeder, and tavern keeper. He was also my 6th Great Grandfather.

Captain Taylor’s story, like so many of our Patriot Ancestors’, is not well known. If not for my wife Nan’s discovery of this Patriot Ancestor of mine while conducting genealogical research on our families a couple of years ago, I might have never even known he existed. And yet, as Captain Taylor’s life has gradually revealed itself to me, I resovled myself to tell his story so that my children and my children’s children might remember.

This is OUR charge, ladies and gentlemen, as descendants of the heroes of the American Revolution; to tell those stories of our Patriot Ancestors and to honor their memories, so that future generations may know.

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
