Peter Tappen /Tappan was recorded born in 1748 at Kingston, Ulster County (Co,) New York (NY). His parents were Petrus (Peter) Stoffelszen Tappen /Tappan b. 1716, Kingston, Ulster, NY d. 1748 , Ulster and Tjaatje Wynkoop b. 1710, d. 1793, Kingston, [relative was Dirck (Derrick) Wynkoop b. 1698 Kingston, d. 1763 at Hurley, Ulster, NY)]. At age 26 Tjaatjen married Peter’s father Petrus on 2 Jul 1736_ at Kingston’s Dutch Reformed Church, Ulster Co, NY; source, Application For Membership Empire State Society member Henry Tappen, National (Nat’l) # 13084, State #1484 approved 19 May 1900 by the Nat’l. Society of the Sons of the American Revolution.

Dirck (Derrick) Wynkoop and Tjaatje were descendants of Cornelius Wynkoop from his children: Johannes, Marytje, Evert, Gerret, and Benjamin. Cornelius was chosen an Elder of the Reformed Dutch Church at Kingston in 1671. In 1671, Cornelius obtained approval to erect a mill at Hurley; source, North America, Family Histories, 1500-2000, Wynkoop Genealogy, pgs 13- 15. Cornelius D. (Direck) Wynkoop, b. 6 Mar 1734, d. 4 Dec 1792, married 1st Leah DuBois of Ulster Co, NY; then, Anna Gansevoort. Cornelius served during the Revolutionary War as a LieutCol (3rd) NY Rgt. of Militia (Ulster Co.) Levies, Northern Dept.; commanded by MajGen’l James Clinton, a brother of George Clinton, 1st NY Governor, m. Sarah Cornelia Tappen (1744-1800); see, https://www.fold3.com/image/21121855

Peter was a 4th son and the last born child of 6 dependents to the marriage union between his parents. Siblings were recorded as a son, Christoffell (1737-42) named for the ‘paterfamilias’ figure* of the Tappen kinship line at Kingston, NY, born in Fort Orange, now Albany to Dutch settlers Jurian Teunis Tappen and his wife; a son, Peter (1738-1748); an infant dau that died, Cornelia Pieterszen Tappen (1740-41); Christopher Pieterszen Tappen (1742-1826) recorded as an ancestor for Henry Tappen, Ibid.; Cornelia Tappen Clinton (1744-1800), wife of 1st Governor of NY, George Clinton (1739-1812); see, Find A Grave Memorial# 209; and, lastly, our subject, Peter Tappen (1748-1792). Peter Tappen’s grandfather, Christoffell* (1681-1740); see, Find A Grave Memorial# 6421917.

At age 23, during late Nov or Dec 1771, Peter married Elizabeth Crannell Tappen (1749-1829) at Poughkeepsie, Dutchess Co, and they had daughters, Catherine, Gertrude, Caroline and 2 sons, between 1772 and 1790.

During 1777, Kingston, Ulster Co, was a seat of resistance toward British vessels clearing the Hudson River at the mapped site of a redoubt at the confluence of Rondout Creek.

Peter Tappen’s name was recorded on a Pay Abstract commenced on 10 Aug 1781 for Snyder’s Rgt., Ulster Co, NY Militia of Capt Evert Bogardus’ Company for the year 1781; source, https://www.fold3.com/image/21310602

A separate search online found a Revolutionary War Muster Roll for Peter Tappen (Sr) a 2nd Lieut., date of commission 20 Aug 1781 with service Roll dated between Feb 1783 at West Point and 13 Mar 1783; separately, between 28 Apr 1783 and 26 May 1783 attached to the 9th Company (2nd) NY Rgt of Artillery attached to Continental Troops commanded by Col John Lamb; source, https://www.fold3.com/image/19221917

An online search of New York Revolutionary War service Card Number 37261211 for Peter Tappen produced several, handwritten names on an Account that stated, “Princpl Interest”: 1) Col Cornelius D. WYNKOOP, 416 Pounds /Princpl.; 2) Henry JANSEN, 111 Pounds /Princpl.; 3) Peter TAPPEN, 36 Pounds /Princpl., and, John McCULLOUGH, 99 Pounds /Princpl., and signed, Joseph Gasherie; see, https://www.fold3.com/image/21057134

A search of New York Revolutionary War service found a military record for Capt-Lieut(s) -Sam’l Mansfield, Thomas Matchin; and, Lieut(s) -Cornelius Swartwout and Peter Tappin (sic),[ aka Tappen (Sr)] in the (2nd) Rgt NY Line Artillery, commanded by Col John Lamb and Maj Sebastian Bauman; source, New York in The Revolution as Colony and State by James A. Roberts, 2nd Edition,, published in 1898, by Brandow Printing Company at Albany, New York (NY) [Artillery, 2nd Regiment Ext. Col. John Lamb pg 63].

Online canvas was conducted of the US Nat’l. Archives and Records Administration, (NARA) WDC, 1790 US Federal Census for Peter Tappen, Ulster Co, NY, pg 184. Family Number 32, found Peter Tappen recorded as a resident of Marbletown with 1 -Free White Male, age 16 and over including Heads of Family; 1 -Free White Male, under age 16 years; 2 -Free White Females including Heads of Family. A separate canvas of NARA, 1790 US Federal Census for Cornelius E. Wynkoop, Marbletown, Ulster Co, NY pg 189 determined the Name, Cornelius E. Wynkoop recorded as a resident of Marbletown with 2 –Free White Males, age 16 and over including Heads of Family; 1 –Free White Male, under age 16 years; and, 4 –Free White Females including Heads of Family.

Marbletown’s population was recorded in the 1790 US Federal Census with 492 Free White Males, age 16 including Heads of Family; 469 Free White Males, under age 16 years; and, 840 White Females, including Heads of Family, pg 191.

A separate online canvas of NARA, 1790 US Federal Census for Cornelius (D.) Wynkoop, Ulster Co, NY pg 183 determined the name, Cornelius Wynkoop recorded as a resident of Hurley with 2 –Free White Males, age 16 and over including Heads of Family; 1 –Free White Male, under age 16 years; 2 –Free White Females including Heads of Family; see, Old Hurley Burial Ground -Colonel Cornelius D. Wynkoop b. 1734 d. 1792, Find A Grave Memorial# 19078688.

The Town of Hurley was recorded in the 1790 US Federal Census with 166 Free White Males, age 16 including Heads of Family; 129 –Free White Males, under age 16 years; 306 –Free White Females including Heads of Family, pg 183.

Peter Tappen, age 44, died during 1792, and was buried at Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery, 342 South Ave at the intersection of Phoenix St., Poughkeepsie, Dutchess Co, NY, with his Spouse Elizabeth Crannel Tappen. Peter’s upright headstone is inscribed, “In Memory of Doct PETER TAPPEN who Died Sep 3 1792 Aged 44 Years & 2 months…”; source, Find A Grave Memorial# 98241309, color photograph taken 3 Oct 2012 and mapped at latitude: 41.68100 and longitude: -73.93390 between Interstate 9 occasionally called, South Road and the east bank of the Hudson River, south of the landmark features Mid-Hudson Bridge near Hudson Heights and Fox Point.
