Author: Gary Baldwin Parriott
John Sutherland (abt 1751 - 1842) came from Scotland when he was eighteen years of age, and he settled in Washington county, Pennsylvania. He was part of the Scots-Irish immigration movement that began in earnest in the early 1700s. John was engaged in farming early on. Farm families, in Pennsylvania, engaged in a plethora of small scale activities, from managing an orchard, to raising feed for farm animals, to making maple sugar or home cured hams. Small self-sufficient farms prevailed from the beginning as had been the case for the Dutch and Swedes that proceeded them. This arrangement was in sharp contrast to the English style village plan envisioned by William Penn. Most landholders purchased tracts of 100 to 300 acres for their farms rather than living in homes grouped in a central village of ten families in a township of 5,000 acres. With the varied task in the smokehouses, poultry houses, potato cellars, summer kitchens, springhouses, and workshops farm activities took up a great deal of family members’ time.

During his marriage to Susannah Norris (1756–1833) they had six children. Their son John Jr was born in Washington county, Pennsylvania and was also a farmer and he served in the war of 1812. John Sr died on Jan 2nd, 1842 and was buried in Cross Creek Cemetery, Cross Creek, Washington County Pennsylvania (Find A Grave Memorial# 16895987)

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
