Joseph5 Sumner son of James4 and Mary Bigelow (Joseph3, George2 and William1) was born29 July 1760 in Mendon, Mass. and died 07 Dec. 1846 in Milford Mass. When he died he was a pauper and is buried in Milford, Mass.
Joseph married Ruth Legg 21 August 1788 in Milford, Mass. and they had 6 children.
Joseph was a land surveyor for the town of Milford and he also was a principal promoter of the separation of Milford from Mendon, Mass.
Joseph was a private in Captain Ephraim Hartwell Company Militia. His pension number is S19804. In 1779 he volunteered or enlisted. Joseph marched to Rutland, Mass. to guard the prisoners of War and was stationed there until he was discharged in 1780. Joseph became a Sergeant during his tour of duty.

The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
