Author: Dale Edward Corey

Christian Streit was born on 7 June 1749 in Germantown, New Jersey, the son of Johann Leonhardt and Elizabeth (Mannesse) Strait. His father was a friend of Henry Muhlenberg (father of fighting pastor Peter Muhlenberg), who instructed Christians in theology at the College of Philadelphia (now the University of Pennsylvania).

He became licensed to preach in Pennsylvania in 1769, after which he led the congregation at the Lutheran Church in Easton, serving there until the outbreak of the Revolutionary War. When Peter Muhlenberg was called to recruit and lead what became the 8th Virginia Regiment, Christian petitioned to become the chaplain for the unit.

Christian served two tours as Chaplain, first with the 8th Virginia from 1776-1777. After this tour, he served the Lutheran congregation in Charleston. During this time, he was captured by the British at the Siege of Charleston and eventually exchanged in 1782.

He then returned to Pennsylvania and took charge of the congregation at New Hanover and three associated churches. On 19 July 1785, he became the pastor of the Lutheran Church in Winchester, Virginia. While there, he served as Bishop for the churches in the lower Shenandoah Valley, preaching in German and English. He served in that capacity for 27 years until his death on 10 March 1812.

He was married three times. First to Anna Maria Huff on 20 July 1779, and they were the parents of two sons:

  • John Melchior was born on 9 July 1779 and died young.
  • Isaac.

Anna died in 1782; on 19 February 1783, he married Salome Graef in Philadelphia, and she died in 1788. During their marriage, they had two daughters who died young.

Christian then married Susanna Barr of Winchester on 19 February 1783 and were the parents of eleven children:

  • Frederick Augustus was born on 31 August 1791.
  • John was born on 4 March 1793 and died young.
  • Catherine Bush was born on 2 November 1794 and married Jacob Baker.
  • Mary Bush was born on 28 October 1796 and married John Mansfield.
  • Evelina was born on 19 August 1798
  • Edward was born on 11 November 1800 and died at 16.
  • Henry B. was born in about 1794.
  • Philip Barnam was born on 5 September 1804 and married Ann Glass.
  • William Hill was born on 23 October 1806 and married Nancy Bell.
  • Emily Susan was born on 16 June 1809 and married George Baker.
  • Frances Ann was born in about 1800 and married John White.

The Patriot died on 10 March 1812 in Winchester, Virginia, and Susanna died in 1836.

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
