Author: Eric Henry Troutman

Johann Jacob Strauss was born on 5 May 1737 (date from pastor's baptism record) in Tulpehocken Township, Lancaster County (now Penn Township, Berks County), Pennsylvania. However, his gravestone which is still standing in 2015 gives his date of birth as 31 December 1746. He was the son of Albrecht & Anna Margaret (Zerbe) Strauss. His father came to Pennsylvania from Massenbach, Germany in 1732, while his mother was born in Livingston Manor, New York, her parents having arrived in New York with 3,000 other Palatines in 1710.

Johann Jacob Strauss (aka Jacob Strauss) was married to Reverend John C. Stoever who baptized him over 20 years earlier. The marriage took place in Bern Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania on 28 May 1758, to Elizabeth Brecht (1738-1795), the daughter of Johann Stephen Brecht, and his second wife Praxeda/Traxeda Kremer. Elizabeth Brecht was born on 14 February 1738, in Bern Township (now Penn Township), Berks County, Pennsylvania. Jacob and Elizabeth Strauss were the parents of nine children:

  1. Albrecht.
  2. Johannes.
  3. David.
  4. Elizabeth.
  5. Philip.
  6. Jacob “Jr.”
  7. Samuel.
  8. Michael.
  9. Catharine.

During the Revolutionary War Jacob Strauss served as a private in Captain Emrick’s Company, Berks County, Pennsylvania Militia. He also paid the Supply Tax in Bern Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania in 1779 and 1780.

Jacob Strauss was a farmer his entire life, his homestead being in Bern Township (now Penn Township), Berks County, Pennsylvania. Jacob died on 5 March 1782 and was buried in the Old Northkill Church Cemetery, Bern Township (now Bernville), Berks County, Pennsylvania. His widow Elizabeth is also buried at the Old Northkill Church Cemetery. It is not known if the Revolutionary War contributed to his early death, but it certainly could have been a factor in it.

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
