James Stewart was born 14 April 1765 at Ireland, or 17 April 1765 at Rowan County, North Carolina.  He was drafted or enlisted at the age of 16 years in April 1781.  He served in Captain John Slone’s Company of Colonel George Davidson’s Regiment of the Rowan County, North Carolina, Militia.  His duty was to guard the ferry from the enemy.  He was stationed frequently on the ferries to prevent or intercept the passage of Tories.  His commanding officer was Spencer Stewart.

James married Margery McEwen, 25 March 1794.  Margery was born 27 July 1772 at Virginia.  Their known children were: Mary, Sara, Margaret “Peggy,” William, John, David and James.

James and Margery lived at Oglethorpe County, Georgia in 1794, and appear on the sellers list for land transactions.  In 1821, they moved to Clarke County, Georgia.  In 1827, James won 202 ½ acres in the Georgia Land Lottery, at District 13, Carroll County.  This area later became Heard County.  James was allowed a pension at *S32534 by his application dated 17 December 1832.  At the time, he was 68 years of age and was living at Franklin, Heard County, Georgia.   He appears in the 1850 U.S. Census, aged 86 years, living with his son, John.

James died February 6, 1854, at Troup County, Georgia.  Margery McEwen Stewart died 21 April 1841, at Troup or Heard County, Georgia.  Their final resting places are not known.  A memorial marker was placed at the foot of the grave of John Stewart, son of James and Margery.  The marker is located at Mount Zion Cemetery at Glenn, Heard County.

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
