Author: Ivan V. Dooley, Jr.
Peter Stephens, Jr., third son of Peter Stephens and Maria Christina Rittenhouse was born in Frederick County, Virginia about 1732.
In 1753, he married Anna Maria (Mary) Chrisman, the granddaughter of Jost Hite, who is acknowledged as settling the first colony west of the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. This same year in the month of June, he leased 198 acres from his father for 20 Pounds and in April of 1754 he acquires 481 acres on Crooked Run in Orange County. In 1755, he returned the 198 acres to his father for 30 Pounds. Eleven years later in June 1766 he sells 381 of the 481 acres for 400 pounds. Sometime around 1767 he and his family move to the New River in Montgomery County. He enlisted for three years in the Virginia Continental line and was in service at the end of the war, obtaining the rank of Sergeant. He was furloughed agreeable to the Order of the Secretary of War August 10, 1884. He assigned his bounty claim to Robert Taylor. Certified by LTC Samuel Hawes.
He was the father of seven sons and one daughter. All seven of his sons are said to have served in the war.
Peter Stephens, Jr. died in 1812 in Wythe (Montgomery) County, Virginia.
Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!
Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
